Here is a story that hits close to home for me and why I work so hard for my clients:
My Grandfather was a very hard worker. Some would even say he worked too hard. As his health started to decline, he still spent years climbing towers in order to make sure his family would be well taken care of in the event something were to happen to him. Unfortunately, something did happen, Parkinson’s Disease.
Like many from his generation, planning ahead for a serious illness was something he avoided because, according to him, “he was as tough as they come”. Because of this will to live, he ended up living for a long time. But as his quality of life declined, it became harder for the family to take care of him. He ended up needing home health care and eventually was transferred to a nursing home as his illness progressed. Since he never addressed long term care earlier in life, all those years of climbing towers and putting money aside went to the nursing home and not his family.
After years in this industry and countless conversations with my clients, I understand how difficult it is to discuss "long term care". Many of us have tough stories, yet still choose not to consider our own future. HOWEVER, STATISTICALLY SPEAKING, THE ODDS ARE NO LONGER IN OUR FAVOR AND THIS IS BECOMING A MUST HAVE CONVERSATION!!
Here are some of the most common questions most folks have in regards to long term care planning:
· DOES MEDICARE HELP WITH LONG TERM CARE?
· HOW DOES MEDICAID WORK WITH LONG TERM CARE?
· NURSING HOMES VS. HOME HEALTH: HOW DO THE COSTS COMPARE?
· IS IT SMART FOR ME TO LOOK INTO LONG TERM CARE INSURANCE, OR SHOULD I SELF INSURE?
There are no “cookie cutter” answers when planning for long term care. Each family I sit down with has different wishes, and different needs.
In addition to learning about what long term care is, a consultation with me allows us to take a “personalized approach” by looking at the actual costs of services in YOUR AREA. We also will talk about topics such as “Is staying home an option?” Or, “Do you see your family playing role in providing care?”
Every conversation I have with my clients is unique.
